Secure guide for Apple devices

How to remove an Apple ID from an iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch or AirPods

Removing an Apple ID correctly is important before selling, gifting, repairing or reusing an Apple device. In this guide I explain how to do it step by step on iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch and AirPods.

You will also see what to do if you don't remember the password, if Activation Lock appears, or if the device is still associated with someone else.

Before removing an Apple ID: what you need to know

An Apple ID, now referred to as an Apple Account, is linked to services such as iCloud, the App Store, Find My, Photos, backups, Keychain, Messages and associated devices.

Therefore, before removing an Apple ID from an iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch or AirPods, it's important to be clear whether you simply want to sign out, erase the device, unlink it from Find My, or delete the account entirely.

Signing out is not the same as bypassing a lock

This guide describes legitimate methods: signing out with your password, removing devices from your account, asking the previous owner to remove it, or going to Apple with proof of purchase. We do not explain methods to bypass Activation Lock.

What happens when you remove an Apple ID

iCloud

Services are unlinked

The device will stop using iCloud, Photos, Find My, backups and other services tied to that account.

Find My

Activation Lock can be removed

If you sign out correctly and disable Find My, the device will be ready to use with another account.

Data

You may lose data

Before erasing or signing out, check photos, contacts, notes, documents and backups.

How to remove an Apple ID from an iPhone

This is the correct method if the iPhone is yours and you know the account password.

01

Open Settings

Go to Settings and tap your name, which appears at the top.

02

Scroll down to Sign Out

Scroll to the bottom of the screen and tap Sign Out.

03

Enter the password

iOS may ask for the Apple ID password to disable Find My iPhone and remove the device from the account.

04

Choose which data to keep

You can choose whether to keep a local copy of contacts, Keychain, calendars or other data before signing out.

Apple states that to sign out on iPhone or iPad you should go to Settings, tap your name, select Sign Out and follow the on-screen instructions.

How to remove an Apple ID from an iPad

On an iPad the process is virtually the same as on an iPhone.

From Settings

Go to Settings > your name > Sign Out. Enter the password if prompted and confirm.

Before you sell it

Check that Find My is disabled and that the iPad no longer appears in your list of associated devices.

If you are going to sell or give away the iPad

Deleting photos or apps is not enough. The important thing is to sign out of the Apple ID and disable Find My to prevent the new owner encountering Activation Lock.

How to remove an Apple ID from a Mac

If you want to remove an Apple ID from a Mac, you must sign out of the Apple ID from System Settings.

01

Open System Settings

Click the  menu and go to System Settings.

02

Go into your Apple Account

Click your name or account at the top of the sidebar.

03

Sign Out

Find the option Sign Out. macOS may ask for a password to disable Find My Mac.

04

Review local data

Before signing out, decide whether you want to keep a copy of iCloud data on the Mac.

If the Mac will be sold, gifted or repaired, make a backup and ensure Find My Mac is disabled.

How to remove an Apple ID from an Apple Watch

On Apple Watch, it's recommended to unpair the watch from the iPhone it's paired with. Unpairing correctly will remove the associated Activation Lock.

If you have the paired iPhone

Open the Watch app on the iPhone, select the watch, tap the information button and choose Unpair Apple Watch.

If you don't have the Apple Watch with you

You can sign into iCloud or Find My with your Apple Account and remove the Apple Watch from your list of devices.

Apple states that to remove the Apple Watch from Find My you must unpair it from the iPhone, and that Activation Lock is removed automatically when you do so.

How to remove an Apple ID from AirPods

AirPods can also be associated with an Apple Account via Find My. If you're going to sell, give away or set them up with another account, it's best to remove them from your devices.

01

Open the Find My app

From an iPhone, iPad or Mac, open the Find My app using the account they are linked to.

02

Select the AirPods

Go to the Devices tab and select the AirPods you want to remove.

03

Remove the device from the account

Use the option to remove that device from your account or from Find My.

04

Reset the AirPods

You can then reset them using the case button, following the usual procedure to pair them again.

If the AirPods appear to be associated with another person

Only the previous owner can remove them from their Apple Account. If you bought them second-hand, ask them to remove them from Find My.

What to do if you don't remember the Apple ID password

If the device is yours but you don't remember the password, the right course of action is to recover access to the Apple Account. It's not recommended to use programs that promise to remove locks without a password.

You can start the recovery using Apple's official options to reset the account password.

Avoid miracle tools

Many sites promise to remove an Apple ID without a password, but they can put your data, money, or the device at risk. If the account is yours, recover the password through official channels.

What to do if the device belongs to someone else

If you've bought an iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch or AirPods second-hand and it's still associated with the previous owner's Apple ID, you won't be able to legitimately remove it without their cooperation.

Option 1

Ask the owner to sign out

If they can access the device physically, they should sign out in Settings or System Settings.

Option 2

Remove it from iCloud

If they don't have the device, they can sign in to Find My via iCloud and remove it from their account.

Option 3

Go to Apple with proof of purchase

If you're the legitimate owner and have proof of purchase, Apple can review a request related to Activation Lock.

Apple allows devices to be removed from iCloud/Find My and also states that, with proof of purchase, you can request help for Activation Lock.

How to legitimately remove Activation Lock

Activation Lock is enabled when Find My is turned on for a device. Its purpose is to prevent someone else using it if it's lost or stolen.

If you are the owner

Sign in with your Apple Account, disable Find My, or remove the device from iCloud.

If you are not the owner

Contact the person who sold or gifted it. That person must remove it from their account.

There are no safe shortcuts

If a device is protected by Activation Lock, the correct solution is to sign in with the associated account, ask the owner to remove it or provide proof of purchase to Apple.

How to remove a device from iCloud

If you no longer have the device with you but it's still associated with your account, you can remove it from iCloud.

01

Go to iCloud

Access iCloud from your browser and sign in with your Apple Account.

02

Open Find My

Go to the Find My or Find My Devices section.

03

Select the device

Choose the iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch or accessory you want to remove.

04

Remove it from the account

Use the option to remove the device from the account or from Find My.

Apple explains that from iCloud/Find My you can remove a device from the list and, in some cases, clear Activation Lock.

Differences between signing out, erasing a device and deleting an account

Action What it does When to use it
Sign Out Unlinks the device from the Apple Account. Before selling, giving away or switching accounts.
Erase device Removes the local content from the iPhone, iPad or Mac. Before handing the device to someone else.
Remove from Find My Removes the device from the account's device list. When you no longer have the device or you've sold it.
Delete Apple Account Permanently deletes the account and associated services. Only if you want to stop using that account permanently.

For most users, the correct action is to sign out and remove the device, not delete the entire Apple Account.

Common mistakes when trying to remove an Apple ID

Buying a device without checking it

Before paying for a second-hand device, check that it doesn't require the previous owner's Apple ID.

Restoring without signing out

Erasing the device without signing out can cause Activation Lock to appear when setting it up.

Using unreliable tools

Some promise to remove an Apple ID without a password, but they can be unsafe, expensive or outright fraudulent.

Not saving a backup

Before erasing or signing out, check whether you need to keep photos, notes, documents or contacts.
