MacBook Pro M2 not charging via MagSafe 3 or USB-C

Before writing off the logic board of a MacBook Pro M2, power, firmware and peripherals must be checked in a logical order. On MacBook Pro models with MagSafe 3 and USB-C, a charging fault can be confined to a single connector or affect the entire power system.

The MacBook Pro M2 line includes the 13‑inch model and the professional 14‑ and 16‑inch models. For an accurate estimate we need to confirm the exact size, year and chip.

The most obvious component is not always the faulty one.

Areas to investigate in this case:

Power controllers: checked before recommending a replacement.

Underpowered adapter: checked before recommending a replacement.

MagSafe cable: checked before recommending a replacement.

USB-C port: checked before recommending a replacement.

Battery: checked before recommending a replacement.

The cause is confirmed by measurement and actual behaviour, not by similarity to another Mac.

Useful behavioural clues from the Mac

The more precise the description, the fewer unnecessary tests will be needed:

It discharges while plugged in.

MagSafe flashes.

Only charges via USB-C.

Does not accept the adapter’s power.

Checks you can do without opening the device

Use the adapter recommended for the size and configuration of the MacBook Pro.

Stop testing if you detect smell, localised heat, liquid or intermittent connections. Continuing to test may worsen a localised fault.

Electronic diagnostic process

The power accepted by each input is measured and the actual condition of the battery is checked. On Pro and Max configurations we also verify whether the charger provides sufficient power.

We also check for secondary damage. A defective input can affect the charging circuit; liquid can reach multiple connectors; and a power loss can cause damage to the file system.

Possible solutions

The same symptom can result in repair of the port, battery, display, firmware or logic board. A serious quote should specify the actual component and not a generic replacement.

At Daniel Gontán we provide MacBook Pro repair with prior diagnosis and service for devices sent from across Spain.

Frequently asked questions

Can a lower-power charger appear to be faulty?

Yes. It may charge slowly or fail to sustain power under load, even though the circuit is functioning.

Can you provide an estimate based only on the symptom?

We can provide a rough guide, but the final price depends on the cause, any secondary damage and the components required.

Do you accept devices from other cities?

Yes. Contact us before shipping to describe the fault, indicate whether important data is present and receive packing instructions.
