MacBook Pro M1 not charging via USB-C

Before declaring a MacBook Pro M1 logic board beyond recovery, power, firmware and peripherals should be checked in a logical order. On M1 devices USB-C charging requires electronic negotiation. Replacing the battery without measuring the ports and controllers can leave exactly the same problem.

The 13-inch MacBook Pro M1 shares parts of the Air M1 architecture but includes active cooling and a different logic board layout.

The most obvious component is not always the one at fault

These are the areas to investigate in this case:

Primary charging rail: checked before recommending replacement.

Cable or adapter: checked before recommending replacement.

Port contamination or wear: checked before recommending replacement.

USB-C controllers: checked before recommending replacement.

Battery: checked before recommending replacement.

The cause is confirmed by measurement and actual behaviour, not by similarity to another Mac.

Useful clues from the Mac’s behaviour

The more precise the description, the fewer unnecessary tests will be required:

The machine boots on battery but does not accept external power.

One port charges and the other does not.

The charger connects and disconnects intermittently.

Charge percentage does not increase.

Checks you can perform without opening the device

Test with a certified cable and charger. Do not clean the connector with metal objects.

Stop testing if you notice smell, localised heat, liquid, or intermittent connections. Continuing to test may enlarge a localised fault.

Electronic diagnostic process

Each port is compared for negotiated voltage and current draw. Then the communication with the battery and the output of the charging circuit are verified.

Secondary damage is also checked for. A faulty input can affect the charging circuit; liquid can reach multiple connectors; and a power loss can cause file system damage.

Data depends on the original logic board

On Apple Silicon the storage is integrated and encrypted. Replacing the logic board does not automatically transfer documents, photos or projects. When no backup exists, the strategy must prioritise the original logic board and avoid actions that erase content.

Before restoring firmware, reinstalling or accepting a replacement, consult the Mac data recovery service.

Potential solutions

The same symptom can result in a repair to the port, battery, display, firmware or logic board. A serious estimate should reflect the actual component required, not a generic replacement.

At Daniel Gontán we work on MacBook Pro repair with prior diagnosis and service for devices sent from anywhere in Spain.

Frequently asked questions

Can a single port fail?

Yes. Each input has its own circuitry and should be compared before declaring the entire logic board damaged.

Can you quote based only on the symptom?

We can provide a preliminary indication, but the final cost depends on the cause, any secondary damage and the components required.

Do you accept devices from other cities?

Yes. Contact us before shipping to explain the fault, indicate if important data is present, and receive packing instructions.
