Apple electronic diagnosis and repair

Mac mini M4 does not recognise a monitor via HDMI or Thunderbolt

The visible symptom alone does not identify the faulty component. A Mac mini with no signal may still be booting correctly. The problem can be limited to the cable, the monitor, the port or the video settings.

The Mac mini M4 uses a revised chassis and may house either the M4 or M4 Pro. Before repairing, it is necessary to confirm the configuration and which ports are affected.

How the problem presents

The more precise the description, the fewer unnecessary tests will be required:

Image appears after reboot.

Another monitor works.

The monitor shows ‘No Signal’.

Works via HDMI but not via Thunderbolt.

From symptom to diagnosis

Known ports, cables and monitors are tested, booting is checked via network or peripherals, and the physical traces of the failing connector are inspected.

We also check for secondary damage. A faulty input can affect the charging circuit; liquid can reach multiple connectors; and a power surge or drop can leave damage in the file system.

Components to rule out

These are the areas that should be examined in this case:

Thunderbolt/USB‑C: is checked before recommending replacement.

Logic board or firmware: is checked before recommending replacement.

Cable or adapter: is checked before recommending replacement.

Monitor and resolution: is checked before recommending replacement.

HDMI port: is checked before recommending replacement.

The cause is confirmed through measurement and actual behaviour, not by similarity to another Mac.

Checks you can make without opening the device

Try a direct cable and avoid chains of adapters.

Stop testing if there is any smell, localised heat, liquid or intermittent connections. Continuing to insist may enlarge a localised fault.

Assessment and quote

First we identify the root cause, then review any associated damage, and finally decide whether the repair is justified. It’s not about promising every fault is repairable, but about avoiding writing off a Mac without a proper evaluation.

You can submit the case via contact or review more guides at Mac Tips.

What information speeds up the diagnosis

Before sending the device, state the screen size, approximate year, capacity, charger type used and the exact moment the fault appeared. Also explain if there was liquid exposure, a fall, an update, a prior repair or progressive loss of battery life.

This information does not replace measurements, but it allows us to prepare appropriate tests and avoid actions that could jeopardise the internal storage.

Frequently asked questions

Can a USB‑C adapter cause a black screen?

Yes. The adapter’s compatibility and power delivery affect the signal.

Can a quote be given based on the symptom alone?

We can provide guidance, but the final cost depends on the cause, any secondary damage, and the components required.

Do you accept devices from other cities?

Yes. Contact us before shipping to explain the fault, indicate any important data, and receive packing instructions.
