Wet Mac keyboard: what to do and how to repair it

If the keyboard of your Machas been soaked — whether water, coffee, a soft drink, wine or another liquid — the most important thing is to act quickly and not switch it on again until it’s been checked.

At Daniel Gontán we provide a professional diagnosis, internal cleaning, logic board inspection, keyboard, trackpad and battery checks, connector inspection and data recovery where applicable.

First steps

What to do if your Mac’s keyboard has been soaked

Water and electronics don’t mix. If liquid has entered through the keyboard it can reach sensitive areas such as the logic board, battery, connectors, trackpad, speakers or power circuitry.

The first thing is to switch the Mac off immediately. If the device is still on, hold the power button until it shuts down. After that, don’t charge it, don’t restart it and don’t try to check whether it “works now.”

Place absorbent paper over the keyboard and trackpad, set the device down face‑down carefully and contact us as soon as possible to have the interior inspected. Time matters because moisture can cause corrosion even with the Mac switched off.

Specific services

Repair of Macs with wet keyboards or liquid spills

Not all liquid damage is the same. It depends on the type of liquid, the volume, how long has passed, whether the Mac was switched on and if you tried to charge or restart it after the spill.

Diagnosis

Internal inspection of the Mac

We open the device when necessary to check whether liquid has reached the logic board, battery, keyboard, trackpad, connectors or internal circuits.

Cleaning

Technical liquid cleaning

We remove moisture, residues and deposits that can cause corrosion, sulfation or later failures in electronic components.

Keyboard

Keyboard replacement where applicable

If the keyboard is damaged, sticky, has non‑responsive keys or registers phantom presses, we will assess whether a replacement is required.

Logic board

Electronic repair

We inspect the logic board, power rails, short circuits, damaged components and connectors affected by the liquid.

Data

Data recovery

If the Mac won’t power on or the damage is severe, we’ll evaluate data recovery before carrying out interventions that could affect your information.

Assessment

Clear quote

We explain what we found, which parts are affected and whether repair is worthwhile before carrying out any work.

Real symptoms

Common issues after a Mac keyboard gets wet

Sometimes the Mac appears to work immediately after a spill, but failures show up hours or days later. These are common symptoms.

The Mac won’t switch on

There may be a short circuit, logic board damage, battery affected, charging circuit faults or liquid residues in critical areas.

The keyboard is unresponsive

Some keys stop working, remain stuck, type by themselves or behave intermittently after contact with liquid.

The trackpad malfunctions

The cursor may move erratically, click by itself, not respond or fail entirely due to moisture in the trackpad or its connectors.

The Mac powers off by itself

There may be electrical instability, battery or logic board damage, sensor faults or power issues caused by liquid residues.

There’s a strange smell or signs of moisture

Liquid can leave residues, stains, corrosion or sulfation on internal components even if the exterior looks dry.

The Mac works but behaves oddly

Random restarts, errors, noisy fans, charging problems, erratic keys or intermittent faults can indicate internal damage.

Coffee, soft drinks or sugary beverages were spilled

Liquids containing sugar, alcohol or salts usually leave more aggressive residues than water and require technical cleaning as soon as possible.

Frequent mistakes

Actions that can make the damage worse

When a Mac gets wet it’s natural to try to save it quickly, but some actions can cause greater harm. Rice, hairdryers, leaving it in the sun or switching it on to check if it works do not solve internal moisture.

Even if the device appears dry, liquid can remain under the keyboard, near the battery, in connectors or on the logic board. Corrosion can progress over hours and turn a simple repair into a more serious fault.

Working method

How we diagnose a Mac affected by liquid

Our process is designed to determine the real extent of the damage before providing a quote. It’s not just about changing the keyboard: we need to know if the liquid reached internal areas.

01

Case review

We ask what liquid was spilled, how much time has passed, whether the Mac was on and if you tried to charge or restart it.

02

Opening and inspection

We inspect the inside of the device to locate moisture, residues, corrosion, sulfation or affected areas.

03

Cleaning and diagnosis

We perform technical cleaning where appropriate and check the keyboard, trackpad, battery, logic board, connectors and power system.

04

Quote and repair

We explain the detected damage, repair options and whether it’s best to repair, replace parts or prioritise data recovery.

Who it’s for

Service for private customers, freelancers and businesses

This service is aimed at anyone who has spilled liquid on a Mac and needs a thorough inspection before risking the device or their data.

We service personal MacBook devices, work machines, computers containing important information and devices used daily for studying, working or running a business.

Honest assessment

We prioritise what matters

If repair is worthwhile, we’ll tell you. If the damage is severe, we’ll discuss alternatives and data recovery when necessary.

Indicative price

Indicative price to repair a wet Mac keyboard

The price depends on the extent of the damage. A preventive cleaning after a recent spill is not the same as replacing the keyboard, repairing the logic board, checking the battery or recovering data from a device that no longer powers on.

That’s why we work with a prior diagnosis and a personalised quote. That way you know what’s affected, what options you have and whether repair is worthwhile.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions about wet Mac keyboards

What should I do if my Mac’s keyboard gets wet?

Switch the Mac off as soon as possible, don’t charge it, don’t switch it on to test it and place absorbent paper over the keyboard and trackpad. Then request a technical inspection as soon as possible.

Is putting the Mac in rice any use?

It’s not recommended. Rice does not clean internal residues, does not remove corrosion and can waste valuable time. The correct approach is to inspect the interior and perform technical cleaning on affected areas.

My Mac still works after the spill — should I be worried?

Yes. Even if it still appears to work, moisture or residues can remain inside. Liquid‑related faults can appear hours or days later due to corrosion or short circuits.

Do you always have to replace the keyboard?

Not always. It depends on the liquid, the time elapsed and the actual damage. Sometimes technical cleaning and inspection is enough; other times keyboard replacement or logic board repair is required.

Can data be recovered if the Mac won’t power on?

In many cases data recovery can be assessed, but it depends on the state of the storage device and the extent of the liquid damage.

How long does repairing a wet Mac take?

It depends on the model, the type of liquid and the extent of the damage. After diagnosis we’ll give you a realistic time estimate.

Is it worth repairing a wet Mac?

It depends on the condition of the device, the model, internal damage and the repair cost. If it’s worth repairing we’ll tell you; if not, we’ll make that clear too.
