iMac M3 won’t power on

The visible symptom alone does not identify the failed component. In Apple Silicon iMacs the external power adapter is part of the power system. A dead unit must be tested from the mains socket through to the internal power sequence.

The iMac M3 retains the 24‑inch format and a high level of integration. The fixed display makes it advisable to exhaust external and electrical checks first.

How the problem presents

The more precise the description, the fewer unnecessary tests will be needed:

The fault appeared after it was moved.

It does not respond even when the power button is held down.

No picture or sound.

The adapter shows no response.

From symptom to diagnosis

The adapter is checked under load, input voltage and iMac current draw. If power is present, we examine the boot sequence and the possibility of DFU.

We also check for secondary damage. A faulty input can affect the charging circuit; liquid can reach multiple connectors; and a power drop can leave file system damage.

Checks you can do without opening the machine

Try a different socket and check that the connector is fully inserted.

Stop testing if you detect smell, localised heat, liquid or intermittent connections. Continuing may expand a localised fault.

Reactivation is not the same as restoration

On some Apple Silicon Macs a firmware reactivation via another Mac can be attempted. Reactivation is aimed at preserving data; restoration reinstalls firmware and erases content. They should not be used automatically without knowing the user’s priority.

Data depends on the original board

On Apple Silicon, storage is integrated and encrypted. Replacing the logic board does not automatically transfer documents, photos or projects. When there is no backup, the strategy must prioritise the original board and avoid actions that erase content.
