What to buy to safely clean your Mac's screen

You don't need harsh products to clean a Mac screen. The key points are to use a soft microfibre cloth, never spray liquid directly onto the screen, and avoid glass cleaners, ammonia, acetone, aerosols or abrasive products.

Essential

Microfibre cloths for screens

The safest option for removing dust, fingerprints and light marks. They should be soft, clean and lint-free. Avoid kitchen roll, tissues or coarse cloths.

Handy kit

Screen cleaning kit with spray and cloth

Useful if you want a product formulated for screens. Always apply the spray to the cloth, never directly onto the Mac, to prevent liquid seeping in at the edges.

For fingerprints

Specialist screen cleaner

Can help with fingerprints or light grease. Check it's suitable for screens and avoid products containing ammonia, acetone, hydrogen peroxide or abrasives.

Workshop / home

Large microfibre pack

If you clean multiple devices, it's worth having several cloths and washing them frequently. A dirty cloth can drag dust and cause micro-scratches.

Travel

Portable cleaner for laptop and mobile

A compact option to carry in your backpack if you use a MacBook away from home. Suitable for gently cleaning fingerprints, external keyboards, trackpads and the screen.

Glass and optics

Optical cleaning cloths for screens

Cloths designed for glasses, cameras or lenses tend to be soft and suitable for screens, provided they're clean and free of sand or grit.

Important before cleaning

Products you should not use on a Mac screen

Do not use glass cleaners, household cleaning products, aerosols, acetone, ammonia, bleach, hydrogen peroxide, solvents, kitchen roll, tissues or abrasive cloths.

Also do not spray any liquid directly onto the screen. If you need to dampen the cloth, do so lightly and away from the Mac. Then clean gently without pressing on the panel.
