MacBook black screen: causes, fixes and when to repair

If your MacBook has a black screen it may be something simple like screen brightness, battery, sleep mode or peripherals, but it can also indicate a fault with the display, backlight, logic board, charging, battery or storage.

Before replacing parts, reformatting or repeatedly forcing power on, it’s important to determine whether the Mac is actually on with no image, completely unresponsive, charging correctly, or if there are important data to protect.

Possible causes

Why your MacBook shows a black screen

A black screen on a MacBook doesn’t always mean the screen is broken. It can happen due to a temporary system fault, an issue waking from sleep, the brightness set to minimum, a drained battery, a faulty charger, peripherals blocking startup, or a macOS update that didn’t finish properly.

But it can also be a physical or electronic fault. If the MacBook appears to power on, makes sounds, the keyboard lights up, or it works with an external monitor, the problem may be the display, display cable, backlight or the image circuit. If it doesn’t respond at all, there may be a charging, battery, power or logic board failure.

The first objective is to know whether the MacBook is on with no image or whether it truly won’t boot. That distinction completely changes the diagnosis.

Before you touch anything

Before trying fixes: protect your data

If the MacBook contains documents, photos, projects, work or other important information, improvising is not advisable. Repeatedly forcing restarts, attempting reinstalls, erasing the drive or trying aggressive fixes can make data access harder.

Always start with simple checks: charger, brightness, peripherals and a controlled restart. If the device doesn’t respond, gets hot, has suffered liquid damage or behaves unusually, stop and assess the case.

At Daniel Gontán we inspect MacBooks with black screens to locate the real cause of the fault: display, backlight, logic board, battery, charging, system or data.

Initial checks

Quick fixes for a MacBook black screen

Power

Check charging, battery and charger

Connect the MacBook to its charger and wait a few minutes. Check whether the charger works, the cable is in good condition and whether the device shows any signs of life.

If it won’t charge or doesn’t recognise the charger there may be a problem with the port, battery, charger or the logic board.

Peripherals

Disconnect all accessories

Remove external drives, USB‑C hubs, monitors, adapters, printers, cards, USB sticks and any connected accessories.

Leave only the charger connected. Some peripherals can interfere with startup or video output.

Brightness

Adjust the screen brightness

It may sound basic, but the brightness could be set to minimum. Use the keyboard brightness keys to increase it and check for an image.

You can also shine a torch onto the screen to see a very faint image, which would indicate a backlight failure.

Restart

Force a restart of the MacBook

Hold down the power button for about 10 seconds to force a full shutdown. Wait a few seconds and switch it on again.

If the issue was a temporary freeze, the MacBook may return to showing an image.

External monitor

Try an external display

If you have an adapter or an external monitor, connect the MacBook. If there’s an external image but not an internal one, the fault may be the display, display cable, backlight or image circuitry.

Startup indicators

Listen for device signals

Check for startup sounds, whether the keyboard backlight comes on, whether the trackpad responds, whether it charges, or whether the fans spin.

Those signals help distinguish between a display problem and a MacBook that isn’t actually booting.

Startup and system

Reset NVRAM/PRAM and check startup

On Intel-based Macs, resetting the NVRAM or PRAM can help with some screen, resolution, startup disk, sound or system setting issues. It isn’t a hardware repair, but it can resolve a black screen caused by a settings lock.

To do this, shut down the Mac, press the power button and hold the keys Option + Command + P + R for a few seconds. Release them and allow the machine to start up.

On Macs with Apple Silicon the process is different and many checks are handled automatically by powering off, waiting a few seconds and powering on again. If the Mac doesn’t respond, shows no image or won’t enter recovery, diagnose before continuing to try repeatedly.

Fault or settings

When the black screen is not a software issue

If you’ve already checked brightness, charger, peripherals and a restart, and the MacBook still has a black screen, the problem may not be macOS. There are hardware faults that produce exactly that symptom.

For example, an internally damaged screen can remain black without obvious external cracks. A damaged display cable can cause the image to fail when opening or closing the lid. A backlight failure can leave the image extremely dim. A logic board fault may prevent power from reaching the display.

That’s why you shouldn’t replace the screen without a diagnosis. It might be the display, but it could also be the logic board, GPU, power delivery, battery, image circuit or liquid damage.

Common faults

Real faults that can cause a black screen

Damaged display

Impacts, pressure on the lid, drops or closing with objects between the keyboard and screen can damage the panel even if there’s no visible crack.

Backlight failure

If the Mac appears to be working but you can barely make out an image with a torch, the backlight, its power circuit or the screen itself may be failing.

Display cable or connector

In some MacBooks a damaged display cable or affected connector can cause a black screen, flicker, intermittent image or faults when moving the lid.

Logic board failure

If the board doesn’t correctly power the display, won’t boot or has a fault in the image circuitry, the MacBook can remain completely black.

Battery or charging issues

A MacBook that isn’t receiving power, won’t charge or has a damaged battery can look like a display problem when in fact it isn’t booting.

Liquid damage

Water, coffee, humidity or corrosion can affect the display, keyboard, trackpad, charging, backlight and the logic board. Don’t power it on before inspecting.

Important data inside

If the MacBook shows no image and you need files, consider data recovery before attempting reinstalls or risky procedures.

Professional diagnosis

Don’t replace the screen without checking the source

A black screen can make you assume the whole display needs replacing, but that’s not always true. If the MacBook shows an image on an external monitor, plays startup sounds, has a lit keyboard or has suffered liquid damage, the diagnosis must go beyond the panel.

In a professional inspection we check power, charging, battery, image signals, backlight, connectors, display cable, screen, logic board and the overall condition of the device.

The aim is to avoid unnecessary part replacements and give you an honest assessment: repair the display, repair the board, check charging, recover data or rule out a repair that isn’t worthwhile.

Working method

How we work on a MacBook with a black screen

01

We analyse the symptom

We check whether the MacBook powers on, charges, makes sounds, lights the keyboard, responds to the trackpad, works with an external monitor or is completely dead.

02

We check power and the display

We inspect the charger, battery, ports, backlight, display, display cable, connectors and image signals.

03

We diagnose the logic board if needed

If the problem isn’t the display, we review the logic board, power delivery, image circuits, liquid damage, shorts or damaged components.

04

We give you a clear assessment

We explain what’s failing, what options you have, whether a repair is worth it and whether data recovery should be prioritised.

Indicative price

Indicative cost to repair a MacBook black screen

The price depends on the cause of the black screen. A configuration issue, a depleted battery, a faulty charger, a damaged display, a backlight fault or a logic board repair all carry different costs.

That’s why it’s unwise to give a fixed figure without a diagnosis. First we identify whether the MacBook powers on, whether there’s external image, whether it charges, whether the screen receives a signal and whether the data is at risk. Then we provide the estimate before repairing.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions about MacBook black screen

Why does my MacBook have a black screen?

It can be due to the brightness being set to minimum, a drained battery, a faulty charger, a macOS freeze, sleep mode, peripherals, a damaged display, backlight, display cable, logic board or charging fault.

What should I do first if my MacBook shows no image?

Check the charger, raise the brightness, disconnect peripherals and force a restart by holding the power button for a few seconds.

Does a black screen mean the display is broken?

Not always. It may be the display, but it can also be the backlight, display cable, connector, logic board, battery, charging or a software hang.

What does it mean if my MacBook works with an external monitor?

If there’s an image on an external monitor the Mac may be booting correctly and the fault could be the internal display, display cable, backlight, connector or image circuitry.

Can I reset NVRAM or PRAM?

On Intel Macs it can help with some display or startup configuration issues. On Apple Silicon Macs the procedure is different and you shouldn’t persist if the device doesn’t respond.

What should I do if the black screen appeared after a knock?

It’s advisable to check the display, display cable, hinge, connectors and logic board before continuing to use the device. There may be internal damage even if nothing is visible externally.

What if the black screen appeared after the MacBook got wet?

Do not power it on or charge it. Liquid can cause corrosion and shorts affecting the display, keyboard, trackpad, charging or logic board.

Can you recover data if the MacBook shows no image?

Yes. If the MacBook contains important information, data recovery can be considered before performing repairs or reinstalls that could complicate access.
