Apple electronic diagnosis and repair

MacBook Air M4 not charging

When a MacBook Air M4 shows this issue, replacing parts by trial often increases the cost. Modern MacBook Airs can charge via MagSafe and USB-C. When neither route works the fault is usually downstream of the inputs; if only one fails, the diagnosis is narrowed.

The MacBook Air M4 is a recent generation. Before opening the case, firmware issues, accessories and warranty must be separated from genuine electronic damage.

Checks you can do without opening the machine

Try a known-good charger and see if charging fails on all inputs.

Stop testing if you detect odour, localised heat, liquid ingress or intermittent connections. Continuing to test may enlarge a localised fault.

What to observe before sending it in

The more precise the description, the fewer unnecessary tests will be needed:

USB-C charges but MagSafe doesn’t, or vice versa.

Charging is interrupted when the cable is moved.

The battery remains at the same percentage.

MagSafe does not light.

Technical tests required

Both charging paths are compared, along with the negotiated power and the battery’s response. Differential behaviour prevents replacing components blindly.

Secondary damage is also checked. A faulty input can affect the charging circuit; liquid can reach multiple connectors; and sudden power loss can cause file system damage.

Where the fault may be

These are the areas to be investigated in this case:

USB-C port: checked before recommending replacement.

Battery: checked before recommending replacement.

Controllers and logic board: checked before recommending replacement.

Adapter or cable: checked before recommending replacement.

MagSafe connector: checked before recommending replacement.

The cause is confirmed by measurement and actual behaviour, not by similarity to another Mac.

Before replacing the entire logic board

A logic board is made up of repairable circuits. When the damage is localised and components are available, microsoldering can be an alternative to replacing the whole assembly.

Information that speeds up the diagnosis

Before sending the machine, state the screen size, approximate year, capacity, the type of charger used and the exact moment the fault appeared. Also explain if there was liquid, a drop, an update, a previous repair or progressive battery deterioration.

This information does not replace measurements, but it allows us to prepare the appropriate tests and avoid actions that could put the internal storage at risk.

Frequently asked questions

Do MagSafe and USB-C use exactly the same circuit?

They share part of the charging system, but the inputs and their negotiation allow different faults to be localised.

Can you provide an estimate based only on the symptom?

A preliminary estimate can be given, but the final cost depends on the cause, any secondary damage and the components required.

Do you accept devices from other cities?

Yes. Contact us before sending to describe the fault, indicate if there is important data and receive packaging instructions.
